My foray into the world of "Afterschooling"

as most of you know, i've really struggled with this issue since we started to become led by God to put our children in PS full time next year. IN the last couple months, i've had time to absorb this decision, to pray about it further, to confront my own sin and selfishness and this is becoming more clear to me than ever.

First, I will say that in the past I was approaching homeschooling all wrong- I identified myself as "a homeschooler" it was sort of a badge of pride, a well-earned proclaimation of my own strength and patience, my own ability to make it all happen. This label was something that I unwittingly had created as an idol. As with most pride issues, it wasn't obvious to me. Maybe much of it came from all the people that would say "wow.. you're amazing.. i could NEVER do THAT!!!" Though i do take responsibility for my own sin. It is what it is.

A few years ago we started using a public virtual school. Basically our homeschooling looked the same. we still bought our own Christian Bible and worldview curricula and also used science and history curricula that was appropriate to our worldview without being overtly "christian" in nature. So we basically looked exactly as we would have had we footed the bill, other than the fact that we were able to do a LOT more, much more art, much more enrichment, much more experiments and depth. Truth be told, we could not afford to homeschool at least for the last 2 years and the virtual school made that possible. We were very glad for that provision that the Lord provided for us. However, I felt the sting of the homeschool movement's elite, which is exactly how I percieved it. We were told basically that we were NOT homeschoolers, (legally we were not, but I can assure you, we most certainly WERE!) which was insulting. There was this division between REAL homeschoolers (those who footed the bill entirely) and FAKE homeschoolers (those who were not financially able to do it ourselves) I worked my butt off through a high risk almost life threatening pregnancy in which i actually lost 65 lbs i was so sick and through the last two years with my twins and a very demanding preschooler.

And praying about the next year, i begged God to let us keep homeschooling, even though all the signs were leaning otherwise. I remember saying to Him- "I am asking permission because i want YOUR will to be primary, and not treat homeschooling as an idol" and what i heard in return was shocking- "YOU ALREADY HAVE!" It blew me away, it humbled me. I knew immediately that He was right. I WAS trusting in homeschooling, looking at my choice as better than others choices, and acting as if MY CHILDREN were going to be good, Bible believing Christians BECAUSE I DID THE WORK OF HOMESCHOOLING.

Now, don't get me wrong- i do NOT think there is anything at ALL wrong with homeschooling. I really wish i was in a place where I could do it, and if and when the Lord releases me to going back, I will be ALL OVER THAT! I LOVE learning with my children, i love studying in whatever way helps each of us to learn! i totally count myself as a pupil in our homeschool. I love our fabulous daily discussions. And I trust that the Lord WILL grant me the desires of my heart WHEN my heart is in the right place.

One thing this whole situation has shown me is how very very much we ARE still homeschooling. We are STILL doing morning and evening Bible we are still doing critical thinking, an area that I think today's youth is not very skilled in, we will still be studying christian worldview and learning about Creation. We'll be having discussions about things that they are learning that they can pick out as being from a secular worldview-- and the older three are GREAT at that. We have Mystery of HIstory, which my 12yo will be reading along his school's study of ancient history, (he's a history buff so that will be a treat for him!) becuase its SO important to see God's hand in history and His work, particularily in ancient times. We do NOT rely on church to do OUR job as parents, raising our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, and never will. we are NOT perfect. Both Andy and I have a lot of work to do, and we will continue to seek His wisdom and most importantly remain in the Word

But overall, i'm getting excited about the prospect of "Afterschooling" and excited about what we will be doing together as a family. One thing that i've found myself struggling to make happen is something that I call our "family culture" This is something that's been traditionally very important to us- however- lately, i've been in survival mode, suffice to say, its been lacking.

So what are we doing?? We are going to be using as a spine for our afterschooling Organic Homeschooling Which you have GOT to check out if you haven't already- This is actually a full homeschooling curriculum, and we won't be using it fully, in fact, we'll be just doing the read alouds, bible for the youngers, and art/crafts. If you are a full time homeschooler, this looks SO OUTSTANDING! i can't recommend it enough- you can email to get a free sample month to see what I mean.

I also am going to be using many of my already bought awesome resources from Timberdoodle Of course you MUST be familiar with Timberdoodle, but if you are not, it is the BEST homeschooling store online. Totally. I have a huge stash of their products, both for big kids and the babies. Its the babies i'm really excited about working with because Timberdoodle has a great supply of educational toddler products that are outstanding. With both of my twins, Elliott who is advanced and articulate and doing great, and Asher, who is super smart, but developmentally delayed, i can find the greatest products to strengthen each of their weaknesses and even just fun stuff to relax with! I'm getting ready to place an order- i'll post some of the goodies I get and how they enjoy them!

Specific things we will be working on afterschool (or BEFORE in the case of Bible)

History- Mystery of History

Bible- Starr Meade's "The most important thing you will ever study" Bible study. This is AWESOME and I scored an AMAZING price at Westminster bookstore Some tips on this one- these are on clearance here, they sell both the OT/NT sets and separately. Its cheaper separately. Also if you buy more than one, you should get one with an answer key and the rest without, the answer key is the same for old and new testament and that saves you $3 per set, which for me, with Alex, Nik, Chloe, and me all needing workbooks saved a good chunk of change!

Toddlers- Timberdoodle Toddler core program, plus extras that i bought. It has actually changed since i bought it last february, sniff, but mine is still awesome. we are loving this and with the big kids occupied in school i'll get to play with the twinnies more :)

That's all I can think of right now... Hope to add more soon, its been crazy chaotic.

Stuff for sale!!!

I am going to be taking a year or two sabbatical- its JUST not going well, and as much as it pains me to pull the plug, dh and I both have been doing a lot of praying on the subject and believe God is leading us to temporarily put the kidlets in PS for a time so that we can focus on the needs of our twins a little better. Asher is significantly developmentally delayed and needs therapy 4x a week and i'm just NOT making it happen! Please do stay tuned though because we are SO totally afterschooling- focusing on Bible and art and critical thinking, but for space and financial reasons, most of my stuff needs to go, so please check out what I have to offer! make me an offer if my prices are too high, i really need to sell.

Do YOU need an "Encouragement Infusion"?

Today, as my Gabby Moms Mission #2, I was asked to review Encouraging Moments- the weekly e-newsletter of Teach Magazine

I highly recommend you go to this site- www.HomemakingWithTEACH.com and look for the little sign up box at the top right hand corner of the page. This is an absolutely FREE newsletter that will arrive in your email box by Thursday of each week. (Mine came Wednesday night this week!)

This month, I'd like to show you what you are missing if you aren't subscribed to Lorrie's newsletter and givge you an idea what you can look forward to from the newsletter!

Here's what this week's newsletter contained:

* A short message from Lorrie, Which I enjoy, since its SHORT and we all know how much extra reading time i have right now!! (yeah, about as much as all the extra BLOGGING time I have :-) She, in her own clever style can make a profound point in a short amount of time and space, which I for one, really appreciate.

* Teach Magazine SALE! (YAY!!!) I love to see what will be on sale next! i'm working through a recent product purchase- the End Morning Madness bundle Haaa!! Anyone that knows me knows what a challenge that is, but with my buddy and accountability partner, Heather, i'm making MORNING happen!

* An update of the goings on on facebook- Are you a subscriber yet??

* An opportunity to hear Lorrie speak live, for locals (including me!) Which i'm hoping to go to if i can a. get up the courage to drive out of my town at night, or b. find someone to carpool with :-)

* A description of the upcoming Eternal Encouragement Magazine Here's a peek of the cover

* A timely tip The One Word Men Fear by Donna Venning Which I enjoyed this month, particularily. It discussed the danger of expecting our husbands to read our minds and know what is wrong when something is wrong. Of course "I" don't ever do that... bwahaha...

*Quick links and contact info- which I like! i HATE getting emails and newsletters that show me all kinds of cool stuff and then expect me to figure out their website address and dig around to find stuff! Perhaps i'm a tad bit lazy, but in the age of the internet, this is easily preventable :)

But, i've left my favorite part for last!

Chick Flicks for Mom!!!

What? (pray tell, you may ask) are chick flicks for moms??

Well, I'll tell you! They are a short (just a few minutes long) video of Lorrie, teaching on a subject that you will almost inevitably find to be one you can relate to. What I like about it is its SHORT, succinct, practical, and I feel like i'm taking a little break from my day, even if it is just a short one. Previous subjects have included:

*Not messing with Gods perfect plan.

*WHIIIIIIINNNNIIIIINGGGGG.....

*What actually constitutes obedience

*Supporting Your Husband

And more...

Today's is on COMMUNICATION, an issue we ALL struggle with.

SO that's my review for the Month, and i'll be saying "over and out" to let you all get on with your day and for me to do the same! Sick kiddos has meant MUCH left undone these past weeks! I Hope you enjoyed this glimpse into the Teach Magazine Newsletter and I hope you subscribe! Good stuff!!! Have a beautiful day loving your families!!!

Rebecca

Ps. I am reviewing Encouraging Moments as an official member of The Gabby Moms blogging program for Eternal Encouragement magazine. I did not receive compensation for this post and all opinions are solely my own.

yes.... we really DO homeschool on occasion!

I know you might think that is not the case since i've not posted an actual project in months! AAK! I have to say the time has escaped me- BADLY, and when we DO have a good school day, i BARELY have squeezed in enough time to do that, let alone photograph and blog our activities! I must say- this year has been rough. I've manipulated our schedule, our curricula, our activities, and i think i might have FINALLY found a plan that will work- AGAIN!

~~~~Science~~~~~
But by the grace of God, today was a good day! We started our school work with science- Nik, Chloe, Anna, and Leif all learned about the periodic table of elements using their new science curriculum- Real Science 4 kids- pre level 1 for anna and leif, and level 1 for chloe and nik By the way, this site, has the FULL LENGTH texts for you to view online! AWESOME! that's what sold me, love these!
Anyway, Chloe and Nik learned about the periodic table, about how protons and electrons have the same number, how the number of neutrons can be determined by the atomic weight minus the atomic number (not too shabby for 4th and 6th graders, i must say!) and researched common household items and what elements they contained.
Anna and Leif learned about atoms also, and how things are different based on their atomic and molecular structure. they learned also about the difference between remembering something and observing something. they all had a great time.
~~~~~~Art~~~~~

Wow. What a fun project! I got the idea from the Art projects for kids site February is Black History Month and so i thought i'd start with an African American artist, and who better to start with than Lois Mailou Jones, an amazing painter who lived from 1905-1998. We used her piece "Les Fetiches" Which she painted oil on linen, but for the sake of my house and sanity we used black artist paper and chalk pastels. Here's the original piece

Isn't it GORGEOUS?? So mysterious, and the colors on black thing is so striking!
So my assignment to my kiddos, and myself, was to make a face based picture on black with chalk pastels, and try to add mystery to the piece. here's what everyone came up with, oldest to youngest.

Mine

Alex- age 15

Nikolas- age 12

Chloe- age 9

Annabeth- age 7

Leif- age 4

Nice huh??? i was excited. I think Nik's was my favorite. He also followed directions the best :)

So after art, each went on to work on their own independent core subjects, and I went off to work with Annabeth on reading, math and geography.

Then since everyone did such a great job at school, we watched "groundhog day".

Off to read the readaloud story to the middle kids! thanks for visiting!!!

Book Review: True Treasures (Eternal Encouragement, formerly Teach Magazine)

I was so excited to get to participate as a Gabby Mom which is a new addition to Teach magazine, now called Eternal encouragement magazine
I get to review a new product from Teach Magazine every month which is fabulous, as i love their stuff!

So I got started as a Gabby mom a bit late, which meant i had only a week or so to review the book "True Treasures- 10 years of TEACH Magazine." So whenit arrived in the mail, i was a bit nervous but still excited. You see, since about child number 5, i've been more a "magazine person" rather than a "book person" My attention span seems to have reduced incrementally with each child :-) I've recently found that reading on my Ipod helps, i think the small space helps me to be not distracted. But since the book I was reading was an actual BOOK, in book form, and i couldn't fall back on my usual reading during my nighttime insomnia with my little electronic friend, i would need to read a book.

NOT that i'm complaining! don't get me wrong, part of the REASON i do reviews is because it FORCES me to READ actual books, which I strive to do, being a literate person and all :-) So anyway, a package arrived and I opened it to discover a beautifully wrapped PRESENT! But i was pleasantly surprised to see that this was a nicely compact and reasonably sized softbound book. Surprised, and a bit skeptical that 10 years of highlights could be contained in 103 pages, i began reading. Would you like to see what the inside looks like? here it is!

The topics of the book are as follows:

-Introduction
-Jewels that make the heart sparkle
-Marriages of Solid Gold
-Parenting Pearls: Practical and Priceless
-Homemaking That Dazzles Like Diamonds
-Homeschooling Nuggets of Wisdom
-Godly Living That Glitters
-Indexes

As I was reading, I thought I'd just be reading a bit at a time but I ended up reading the whole thing in one sitting, with an interruption or two to peel a baby off a table. But thankfully Dh was home, because I was quite immersed. I read and decided at each chapter's end, that I liked THAT chapter better than the last, and continued to do so until the end! I was impressed, and awed by how much work it must have taken to select just a few articles in each category from 10 YEARS of magazine!

Here are some of the things I read that were particularily appropriate to me at this season in life- (And i suspect as my life changes so will what i find notable about the book! LOVE THAT!)

- pg 16 "Slow and Steady" By Lorrie Flem- an encouragement that among the tedium- actual progress IS being made!

- pg 27 "Mothers , Move Over" By Lorrie Flem- An admonishment to let your husband lead your family! But not just the admonishment, practical steps you can take to make that happen!!! (which is so helpful to one who is naturally passionate about Christ and Christian living, and a natural leader, vs. my dear love, who is a steady, hard working man, who tends to not get overly excited about stuff)

- pg 50 "Give Them Your Heart" By Marilyn Boyer- yes, THE Marilyn Boyer! Which talks about things that we mothers tend to allow to take the place in our heart of our children, including our reputation, a clean house, our goals, our pleasure, our time, and more. OUCH. This one hurt- But its a good hurt.

- pg 53 Bible Verses to Pray for your Children- VERY COOL!

- pg 67 "Teach Your Daughters (and Sons!) to Embrace Homemaking (or Anything Else You're responsible for in Life!) By Lorrie Flem. Love that title! and I love the message, and I'm really glad she didn't exclude sons- one of my pet peeves is when people have such rigid gender roles that they don't even take into consideration peripheral, yet important issues. For example, when my sons' wives have babies, i would fully expect those boys to be doing the cooking and cleaning for a while. And suffice to say there will be no 35 year old, still living at home man-boys around my house! But I digress! This article is about an issue we are dealing with heavily at our house. ATTITUDE. This is one of my big soapboxes, that Christians need to embrace their roles and work to their best ability. Where ever we are in life, that's where God has put us, and we need to do all the boring stuff that needs to happen just because that's where we are! And I think my children are getting a big sick of hearing me say "You don't have to WANT to do it, you just have to DO IT." But reading this article has given me ideas of how to LEAD by example and effectively shepherd them!

- pg 72 "7 Ways to Break the Breakfast Blahs" By Lorrie Flem- Um.... yeah, we have cold cereal. EVERY DAY. And i've got grace about that, I have 7 children including twin toddler BOYS, its truly a miracle that anyone eats ANYTHING around here, but i'm planning for a day when i might actually... GASP..... COOK BREAKFAST! So i'm mentally preparing for that.

- pg 79 "7 Rules for Homeschooling and Loving it" by Lorrie Flem- Yeah, again, a much needed refresher for me, since homeschooling is starting to feel more like doing laundry than "lighting a fire" :-)

- Pg 85 "Yippee! its Still Free!" By Lorrie Flem- which is a great list of freebies you can find online, free curricula, music, math, etc. good stuff!

So anyway, Suffice to say, I enjoyed the book "True Treasures- 10 Years of Teach Magazine" and I am pleased to have gotten to review it! If you would like to buy a copy for yourself, use the code GABBYMOM at checkout to get $4 off this book!
And be sure to check out http://www.homemakingwithteach.com/ for good products, articles, recipes, and more for homemakers, moms, women, etc!

DISCLAIMER- I received this product for honest

A review- "Radical" by David Platt

As I Sat on my bed, holding the telephone in one hand and gripping my hair in the other, tears streamed down my face. I'd HAD it. Every trial it seemed possible had attacked me in the previous weeks. More insidious were the thoughts popping into my head, relentlessly. "What if you live your whole life trying to be a Christian, TRYING to please the Lord and despite your best efforts God meets you at the pearly gates and says 'nope! you aren't good enough! be gone with ya!'" As I cried My friend Heather reassured me that I was wrong but not to take it from her- to take some time in prayer and ask God himself. I got off the phone, laid on my bed and cried and prayed and asked for ANSWERS. I felt USELESS. I felt as if I NEVER accomplished a thing. Every day blurred into the next and I was left feeling pretty useless. But covered in the comforting lull of a good solid prayer/cry session I felt better. I got up and wiped the tears away and went to check on my 7 children, alone in the living room. Then my eyes glanced across the hall to the dining table where I'd carelessly tossed a package that had arrived earlier in the day. I opened up the package and found the book I'd ordered a few weeks ago and forgotten about. It was this book. As i read the first page, i cracked up. My older children asked me what was so funny. They laughed along with me. As I read the book, the ENTIRE book, in one day, I had many laughing aloud moments. The author, David Platt, Described by some as "the youngest megachurch pastor in history" has a compelling, writing style that made me want to keep on reading. As i continued to read, Mr. Platt described Jesus' style of ministering to people. The primary focus of his ministry was a mere 12 men. I finally understood. My life MEANS something. While in the eyes of the world, I may not be accomplishing much, I am teaching my children to be radical followers of the Lord! And beyond that, I'm teaching them that BEING radical followers of the one TRUE God is the most important thing they will EVER do. Oh the power in that! Now, lest you not know me very well and think I'm all about ego and think i'm perfect, I will say that while the book covered ideas with which I was mostly familiar, I was also very much challenged by the ideas contained within.

This pastor has a rare conviction of focusing on the WORD and not trying to sugar coat and dumb-down the Gospel. One of the first topics in the book was Mr. Platt contrasting the differences in Asian believers, sweaty and nervous, telling heart-wrenching tales of martyrdom and capture; all in a days work for an underground Christian. Then he described an American church event, complete with state of the art recreation fields, inflatables, trendy bands, and plenty of food. And Christians that lived, comparably, in the lap of luxury. He discussed churches that would give $5000 to third world starving people and spend ten to 100 times more on a high tech church building. Looking at it in those terms, it is easy to see how INSANE this life we live is! He talked about the silliness of the concept of "accepting" Christ. As if He, the son of God needs "acceptance" It really demonstrated in understandable terms the ridiculousness of being "made" a Christian by reciting a prayer and signing a contract. He also pointed out that the Great Commission, the last commandment Jesus directly gave His people (us!) was to "Go and make disciples of ALL people, to baptize them, and to give up every THING and every ONE in the process! Wow. A tall order indeed, and yet, is this not what we agree too when we make that choice to lay our lives down for our savior? Is eternity that cheap that we can be content with weekly church service and halfhearted giving, both in time and money? Yes, we are to love EVERYONE and seek EVERYONE. We are to go out to the poor of the world, not just finance others, so we don't have to get our hands dirty. He also committed the cardinal sin in American churchdom- to suggest that wealth is NOT a great goal to aspire to. He compares American churchgoer's wealth to the act of slave-owning. Something that was a "blind spot" in the past, that now, we all can see was heinous, a grievous act of an insensitive people. Well, the author suggests that we are committing a grievous sin ourselves in accruing wealth while brothers and sisters in other parts of the world starve. What can I say, it makes sense. I can definitely see this book "stepping on some toes." But its a GOOD pinch.

There is SOOOO much more in this book that I simply don't have time to mention, But I would encourage you to read this book for yourself. The rewards of living a life of courage, of bravery, of selflessness, described by Mr. Platt are immeasurable. I am blessed to have not only the reassurance of my worth, but practical steps I can take to live out God's mission for my life.

You can find the Kindle edition of this book for a GREAT price here

and for only $1 more (right now) the paperback version here
